Valerie Speaks her Mind.

Woooooah, two posts in one day? Yes. But this one is a real post and the other isn't even a paragraph. So it's all good.

Here is a snippet from my novel for NaNo :D

“Oh. My. God.”

Yes! He thought. She would admit her love for him, and that Andrew was just okay. He would be her boyfriend.
“I cannot believe you Alex! Really? Now?”
Okay, this wasn’t how he’d expected it. “I spent the past two years waiting for you to man up and ask me out!” she shouted.
“But… You’re all about empowerment. I thought you would…”
“I knew you liked me! You just didn’t have any guts! You never have!”
“Valerie…”
“No! You missed your god damn chance. I gave you every opportunity, and you only muster up the courage when I’m already with someone else!”
“I just wanted to wait until the right time.”
“And the right time is now?!” She breathed a deep sigh. “Look, Alex. I moved on. I decided that I’m too strong to sit around pining after a child who refuses to be anything else. Now Andrew is here, and I like him. I really really like him, and he likes me. I deserve this okay? I’m not going to ditch someone who appreciates me, and I appreciate, just because you decided jealousy was the right motivator for honesty.”

Yep. Valerie is awesome. I'm going to go a write a crying Alex. Bye!

P.S: Have you checked out Pickle And Potato? Because you should.

P.P.S You know you're best friends when you're deciding to make a large block of text in Times New Roman, and you catch yourself thinking, "This is Potato's favorite font!"

Forever (A poem about love)

Forever is a very long time
In the beginning of Forever
When the stars high above
Did not yet shine
My love began

Forever is a very long time
When the dust of the explosions
Still settled in empty space
When skies were born
My love was young

Forever is a very long time
When humanity was new
Painted horses danced
In the firelight
My love was bright

Forever is a very long time
In the ancient cities
Where math first lived
As new ideas
My love multiplied

Forever is a very long time
When castles had hard stone walls
When kings ruled
All they could see
My love grew vast and strong

Forever is a very long time
When new ideas were abundant
In Victoria's time
A time of finches
My love evolved

Forever is a very long time
When buildings scraped the sky
When lines were
Made useless
My love flew through the air

Forever is a very long time
Four billion years from today
When the sun grows cold
When life is dead
My love for you will endure

What do you think? I really like this one. But, it combines love, poetry, history, and I get to talk about space.

Now, as this updates automatically, I am on an six hour plane trip.  Why, you may ask. Well, because.

But seriously, we'll be visiting my aunt who I haven't seen since my birthday, and I haven't seen Potato for two years.

(By the way, I made a tumblr! Its where I'll post interesting or strange things my friends have said, along with stuff i think is cool. The URL is worse-than-tonks.tumblr.com, because Dragonchild upon seeing me with blue streaks in my hair a while back stated, "It's blue now! you're worse than Tonks!")

The Other Travelers

So, after I published my post last night, I realized something. I actually have two more Travelers, who arguably have the coolest, most outlandish names I've come up with. They never  got there stories anywhere near finished, and I didn't even really start writing one of them. But these girls didn't travel through worlds- these two are my Travelers Through Time.

Pompeii Smith-Johnson was a character whose parents (unbeknownst to her and her brother) were time travelers. She's adopted from Italy, but what she doesn't know is that she was a baby lying in the streets of Pompeii on volcano day, that her parents took back to their time.
Later on, a girl named Dylancé Spinner (another weird name I'm superproud of) and her band of time traveling orphans comes back from the future to take Pompeii on a rescue mission.

Infinite Obscurity Parker also had a time traveling parent. In fact, her father was the Keeper of Time, and she lived in a mansion filled with doors to different times and places. She's my youngest Traveler, at age 11, but since she's a time traveler, she can ort of get around the age requirement. She ends up breaking her dad's reasonable rule of "Don't go through the doors without me, because you don't have the key to get back," and getting stuck in New York during the Victorian era with a little boy named Jasper.

Travelers Through Worlds

So, I've recently noticed a recurring theme throughout my more recent stories, and I find the differences and similarities fascinating. I kind of wonder what it says about me, but all of these stories involve a relatively average teenaged girl, travelling to a different world, and discovering something.

Some of you will (hopefully) recognize The Old House, and it's every-girl protagonist Sara Kelly, so I figured we may as well start there and work in reverse chronological order.
I'll give you some stuff about the character, a brief description of the other world, and a paragraph or two about the character's experience there.

*

The Old House
The Character: Sara Elissabeth Kelly, age 15
The Other World: A totally different steampunk world where some people have clocks for faces, and crime is rampant.
Interesting Fact: Sara is the only one of my "travelers" without a love interest. ALthough, throughout the whole story, she is helping to rescue Lydia's fiance.
My favorite excerpt:
She gestured at Sara’s beat up lime green high tops which her best friends had all signed at the end of year nine instead of her year book. Katy’s signature was the biggest. She had written it with a big black sharpie, covering half of Sara’s left shoe. She wished that she had tucked her phone into Katy’s clothes before they left, but it was still in the pockets of Sara’s carefully ripped jeans at Katy’s house.
It probably wouldn’t work anyway, she thought.  She still had no freakin’ idea where she even was, beyond room 17 at Rennal’s Inn and Tavern. She was being dressed like a doll by criminals, in a strange inn filled with clock-people and murderers behind a magical door. That’s it! She thought angrily, I’m going home, grumpy old lady or not!

Searching For Solace

The Character: Solace Estragón, age 16
The Other World: Several different chemical induced "lucid dreams" created by the character herself in a sci-fi hospital.
Interesting Fact: Originally, I had imagined Solace as Indian (as you can kind of see on the cover I made), although as I was writing, she sort of became Hispanic, and a scene about her mom's Mexican hot chocolate is one of my favorites in this travesty of a NaNoWriMo. I guess sometimes characters write themselves.
My favorite excerpt:
“That’s the most elegant Architect Haze I’ve ever seen,” whispered Coles, full of awe. “She’s made herself God.”
And she was, swirling and turning, gliding along, making her own world. Every movement, mirrored by new life springing up behind her, in a dance of creation.

Suddenly, she stopped moving, she stood still with her arms reached over her head. Noah and Coles thought the screen had frozen. After a few seconds, a low buzzing noise started up, and a slow smile crept onto Solace’s face.
The buzzing grew louder, and they saw that it was coming from a fleet of approaching helicopters. Solace sat down, still smiling, and the helicopters opened fire.

The helicopters fired relentlessly, it looked like chaos, but Solace knew better.
They shot down the first tree Solace had made, until it was a flaming pile of timber, and then moved onto to the one directly next to it.
The bombs rained down, copying Solace’s dance exactly, horribly following every twist and turn she had made.

Her garden was a beautiful maze, of swirls and bends, and the helicopters set every blade of grass on fire in the exact order they had been created.

It wasn’t chaos. It was order at it’s finest.

The Boy With Violet Eyes

The Character: Adelie Rennal, age 14
The Other World: A mirror image of her own world, although the people who inhabit it are very different than in her world.
Interesting Fact: You may recognize Adelie from The Old House (although Sara's excerpt up there doesn't have her in it, she is a main character there as well. I created her for my first NaNo, in which she is a boring, meek, mary sue with pretty much no redeeming value except her faith. when I started The Old House, I "recycled" her, so she could have some redemption for the utter mouse she is here.
My favorite excerpt:

I sigh and look out the window to the place where I saw the boy two days ago, and at the setting sun, and he appears.
He doesn't walk to the spot, he literally materializes before my eyes.
I shakily add to my diary:
The Boy with the violet eyes stands in the alley. I watch him through my bedroom window, and he is eternal. He looks my age, but his amaranthine eyes tell another story all together. He looks a thousand times wiser than Aunt Luelle and her verses from the Book of Creation, and I, Adelie Rennal of Ceruli City, Ceruli will meet him tonight.
I shut my book and stuff it in the waistband of my bloomers under my nightgown. I run to the window. He’s still there.
I throw open the window and climb out onto the apple tree, and promptly fall out trying to climb down.

This is Harder Than I Thought... (Blogging and The Plague)

I apologize for my absence.

FIRST: My whole family got ridiculously ill with what I like to refer to as The Black Plague of 2012. We were all coughing (actually, we're still coughing), moaning, and running really high fevers. Everyone except my dad.
Luckily, that's all over, and we're pretty much ok now.

SECOND: I also haven't been posting because of the internal chaos over at Starlit Castle. If you don't know what that is, (firstly SHAME!) go check it out, because it's a bunch of teenaged girls who (in theory) write stories, poems, songs, and whatnot. Also Potato is part of it, and she's my awesome funny best friend.

This internal chaos is relatively simple: I am herding cats.

I like all of these people, and I am in charge of making sure they stick to schedules, don't make too many tags (note: guys, stop making so many tags), making announcements, and I still have to keep up with my own posts.
So being a nice person, I really don't want to yell at my friends to do what they're supposed to. But it just makes me infuriated when they don't.

On a lighter and less frustrated note, I think I designed a banner for this here blog on a Starbucks napkin, and will get that all set up as soon as i can find it.

8-15: The Old House

Wow, time has flown.
Anyways, today I want to share a part of the book I'm writing. It's called The Old House, and it's about a girl named Sara Kelly who travels to... actually, I'm not gonna tell you, you'll have to keep reading! :)

Sara and Katy had finally gotten to sleep around two in the morning. They had been chattering all night in an effort to “pack every drop of summer full of amazingness,” as Katy had said.
But rest was short lived, as Sara woke to somebody shaking and poking her at four twenty-seven precisely.
She rolled over sleepily and mumbled, “Katy?”
Katy hit Sara’s shoulder with a pillow.
“Shush! Do you want my mum to wake up?”
Sara sat up and rubbed her eyes.
“Why on earth did you wake me up?” she demanded.
Katy gave a suspicious smile (curiously similar to the one Sara had gotten from Josh Mason earlier), and Sara noticed for the first time that she was dressed in all black.
“Katy, what’s going on?” Sara asked seriously.
“I’ll tell you when we get there! Now put these on!” She said throwing dark clothing at Sara.
 . . .
Sara smacked Katy’s shoulder. Hard.
They were standing in front of Church Cottage.
It looked especially ominous with the weak moonlight illuminating the mist around them in the cold night.
Hell would freeze over before Sara was going inside that creepy old house.

Tell the devil to grab some snow boots, Sara thought miserably as she and Katy stepped through the door.
The inside of Church Cottage was warmer than the crisp summer night, but it was to dark to see.
Katy pulled out her bag and Started rummaging while Sara fumbled for a light switch, but didn’t find anything.
Just as her eyes were getting somewhat used to the lack of light, Sara’s vision was flooded with brightness, as Katy found her flashlight and turned it on.
Katy grinned like an idiot and said, “Shall we have a look around?”
Sara was about to shout at the top of her lungs that she was leaving right this instant and that if Katy had any sense she’d come back too, but instead she heard herself say (somewhat breathless and shakily)
“Okay.”

The house was amazingly well kept on the inside.
The paint was a bit flaky, and the rooms were almost totally empty of furniture, but it was cozy, and the photos on the walls were still mostly all right, but some of them were a bit bizarre.
Sara’s favorite was a picture of a girl a little older than herself in a victorian portrait. The strange thing was that she was sharing the photograph with a particularly elaborate grandfather clock. The top of the clock looked oddly like a crown.
Katy found a painting of someone with a clock for a head.
Sara would never ever admit it, but she was having fun snooping around the cottage and pointing out strange pictures, and was kind of sad when they had looked through all the rooms.
“Well not all of them,” Katy had remarked.
There was only one room in the entire house that was locked, and it happened to be the most interesting.
The door was in the hallway. It was painted crimson red, and had the number “8281” engraved elaborately into it.
Katy said it was probably just another bedroom, but Sara wasn’t so sure.
She loved to read about all those old houses with secret passages and secret doors, and thought it would be utterly fantastic to live right near one.
“Sara, I’m gonna go look at the portraits again, that door freaks me out,” Katy whispered barely audible, “I think it’s locked for a reason.”
Sara shrugged.
“I’ll stay here.”
Katy Ran off as if she were being chased. She had seemed really scared of the locked door, where as Sara felt she was sort of drawn to it.
Sara jiggled the handle again, just to make sure it really was locked. The handle didn’t budge.
She sighed and leaned against the door.
It creaked open, like something that hadn’t been moved in twenty years.
Sara reminded herself, that it probably hadn’t.
Sara poked her head through the door.
It was a sitting room, painted the color of banana pudding. There was a crackling fire in the fireplace.
Hanging on the mantlepiece was a photo of a young woman looking extremely cross at whoever was taking it.
Sara froze.
There was somebody in the house.
Sara stepped into the room and the door slammed closed behind her.
“Lydia? Is that you I hear? You’ve been gone nearly a week, you impetuous little freeloader!” a woman’s voice yelled out.

Sara ran back to the door and started pushing on it furiously, trying to open it before the woman realized she was there.
“Lydia Winnoway, if you think you can sneak about like this! If you think I don’t know you’ve been off with that… that ticker on one of those flying machines, you are sorely mistaken!”
The voice was closer now.
“When my brother and his mettlesome wife died, I swore I would protect their only child! I seriously doubt they meant for you to…”
She broke of as she rounded the corner into the living room and saw Sara.
The woman was a short plump old lady in a floral dress covered in flour, her steel-gray hair was tightly coiled into two buns on either side of her head. She was carrying a spatula covered in something sticky.
“Who the hell are you?” the woman asked with an odd mix of shock and general grumpiness on her wrinkly face.
“Er, Sara, Sara Kelly”
“What are you doing in my house?”
“I didn’t mean to be! I came in from Church Cottage!”
“Oh course you did, and I’m King Christopher!” She tried to whack Sara with her gooey spatula. Sara ducked and ran for it. She rushed through the rooms of the unfamiliar house while the lady chased her.
“You rascals always trying to break in here! Well, you go back and tell whoever you work for that Muriel Winnoway’s private belongings don’t belong to no-one! No-one, nohow!”
Muriel picked up Sara by the scruff of her neck and threw her out the door.
“And if you see that no good niece of mine give ‘er this!” The old lady spit on Sara’s face and slammed the door.

December

The last month of the year. Wow.
I can't believe it's crept up on me like this.

It's getting colder, the grass is finally green from all the rain we've been having, and I'm learning something new about the universe:

Acceptance is not admission of defeat.

I didn't finish my book, and I'm okay with that. I'm ridiculously proud of myself, actually. How many people even challenge themselves to do this? More over, how many people give up?
I'm so proud that I wrote half a book in a month. It's pretty amazing when you think about it; I wrote 10244 words. and they were pretty good words too.
I'm pleased as punch.

I also learned another thing to accept.
That boy I like? (Let's call him Jake)
He's not ready for anything more than friendship, and I need to accept that.

If I stand around waiting for him to grow up, I'll miss out on a thousand other boys, who are just as amazing.

That's not fair to me.
So you know what? I am ready to keep Jake as my best friend, and maybe someday, he'll want me as more than that.
But if I'm already taken, than Jake will have to deal.
Because I got the phone number of a boy in my karate class.

To you I offer this

If you love somebody
If you have dreams
If you know in your heart that we are all one family
I offer you my home

If your luck has turned against you
If your hope has been crushed
If everything you used to love has been obliterated
I offer you my hope

If you've ever written words like these
If you've ever cried for followers
If you've ever put your heart on the line in the hopes of someone listening
I offer you my respect

If you are anyone
If you have doubted yourself
If you need a friend in times of hardship
I offer you my hand

If you cry yourself asleep
If you hold a knife in your hand
If you wish for the end to come sooner then later
I offer you my love

If you have wished on a star
If you have searched for four leaved clovers
If everyone tells you that faeries aren't really real
I offer you my beliefs

If you are reading this
If you care for people you've never met
If you know that every second counts in our lives
I offer you my thanks

Giving...

...Up.

Yes, you thought this was going to be a lovely post about thanksgiving and all that, but that's for tomorrow, or thursday.
Today I'm going to cry.

there are eight days left, eight days until i cry all night, scream all day, and hate myself for a year.
Because there is no way that i can write 17646 words in eight days.

I have been slacking off, not writing a single word all last week.
I told myself, It's pointless, you'll never finish anyways, so you may as well sit and watch Mythbusters.
So I did. Sort of.

Because in my head, Solace and Noah are positively screaming for attention, and I have ignored them.
I will probably almost definitely fail.

but I will not lie down and cry.

I will go out screaming in a blaze of fire

The Obsession: I will not fail, I cannot win

How many of you are doing NaNoWriMo? If you are, WHY ARE YOU READING MY BLOG???YOU HAVE A WORDCOUNT TO KEEP UP!!!
If you aren't, and have n idea what i'm talking about, basically a bunch of (crazy) people try to write a book in a month.

This is my second year, and last year I failed.
Actually,  I was the only one of my friends who failed, and that feeling kind of hugely sucks.

All my friends and I are writing again this year, and all their ideas are amazing. (one of my friends is writing about a cactus smuggling ring, operating from inside a greek restaurant that's name nobody can pronounce, and was a struggling shoe store in the 80's)

My story is Sci-Fi (you can read a bit on My BFF Potato's and my writing blog) and I love the story, but it's So. Hard. To. Write.
I DO NOT WANT TO FAIL. IT IS NOT AN OPTION IN ANY WAY. Failure makes me feel like crap, and I know, everybody feels like that, but doesn't everybody say "learn from your failure?" I don't. I freak out, I obsess over whatever i've done wrong, and cry.
It's immature, it's unproductive, but it's all I know how to do.

I Must Leave You (For a time)

i'm writing a novel this month, so i doubt that i'll post very often.
I apologize, and will leave you in the capable hands of the virtual fish gadget, and the beatles, because blackbird is stuck in my head:

To Survive

They laugh at your fears
They whisper your name
You scare them
What do they know?
You are only human
But you tell them:
Life isn't perfect
Bad things happen
Scars are invisible
There's more than their bubble
You show them the light
They'd rather the dark
They don't want to know
So they crawl away
They fear you and your truth
They laugh when you cry
They can't see your scars
But they know that they're there
Because you don't let them forget

To See You Go

My mind was open
My eyes were
Closed
Shut
The stars were out
But I couldn't see
Through the cracks
In my bedroom wall
So I searched the land
The sea
The sky
To find a clue
A pointer to where you are
Are you there?
I know you can see this
Find me
The moon is high above me
But alas
So far below your feet
I'll wait for you
At the station
The place we said
Goodbye
So long
I closed my eyes
Tight
So I wouldn't
Have
To
See
You
Go

Useful Links for Writers

I like to write.
I would go so far as to say i'm a writer.

I think that the names of characters are almost as important as plot, so i'm giving you the links to my best character naming resources. :)

Even though this site is a pregnancy support site, it has the best names and meanings selection that i have found so far.

When writing things in different time periods, i like to go to social security administration's popular baby names site, where they have the stats for the popularity of names in different years.

And finally, when doing sci-fi or fantasy, you want weird names so i use this name generator program. (Occasionally, the names are unpronounceable, but it's easy to use)

Lady Elisabeth

update: the name generator no longer exists on that web address and is now here
